A Guide to Marinas in North East Florida

So what’s a Marina?

A marina (from Spanish [maˈɾina], Portuguese [maˈɾinɐ] and Italian [maˈriːna]: marina, “coast” or “shore”) is a dock or basin with moorings and supplies for yachts and small boats. Also, marinas differ from a port in that marinas do not handle large passenger ships or cargo from freighters.

The word marina may also refer to an inland wharf on a river or canal that is used exclusively by non-industrial pleasure craft such as canal narrow boats.

In fact, not all marinas accommodate “liveaboards”. Consequently, before looking for liveaboard marinas there are a few basic things you need to consider:

  • Does the marina should suit your job? In particular, whether you stay at home, go into an office, or if you are retired.
  • Whether you like parties or you like a quiet environment and alone time.
  • Whether there is an emphasis on security. Namely, look for marinas which have security gates at each dock and security guards.
  • Importantly, check the shower and restroom facility. In order to see the level of cleanliness and upkeep.
